*~WHAT'S ON MY MIND~*

As of 12:54 AM, this day, my new pen was in San Francisco. It's getting closer, huzzah~!

*Loves UPS's package tracking site waaaay too much. xD*

So I've been thinking (shocking, eh?) about something lately.

What are your feelings on commenting/faving?

Do you think it's okay to fave a deviation without commenting to say why?

Do you consider a fave to be a compliment in itself? Why, or why not?

Up until now I haven't really given the matter much worry. I consider faving a deviation to be a way of saying, "This is good, I like it." So, it doesn't bother me at all if people fave and run without saying anything about my work (unless of course I've specifically asked for further feedback, in which case it's kind of annoying...).

I understand that many of my watchers probably watch a lot of other people, and can't be expected to comment--at least not with much thought and meaning--on each and every piece that tickles their fancy. :3

On the other hand, though, I understand the frustration of those who want more feedback than just a fave, or even a quick, "Nice picture!" type of comment. It's hard to improve if your audience isn't telling you what they like or don't like about your work, and why...

I dunno', I tend to fav and run a lot, since most people who ask ask on like...EVERY ONE of their deviations. Then I'm like "Okay, either I fav it, or I ignore it when you do that; you ain't getting a comment. :/" I personally think it's more than enough just to get a couple faves, y'know? :D; Especially when it's on original work, not just fan crap. I got three favs on my last upload of that WIP, and I like, wanted to spam their pages with thanks. |3

UPS tracking is amazing.

I'm not really picky about commenting/faving--if people actually like something I've done, I'm happy.

I always make sure to comment on everything I favorite to let the artist know just why I like the piece so much (besides, a lot of the stuff I favorite tends to move me to prosaic praise that I just can't leave unwritten).

For the most part, I consider favorites to be compliments--it obviously shows people like your work.

The one exception is when people devwatch me and then proceed to indiscriminately favorite every single thing I submit regardless of quality. It's like...favorite something because you LIKE it, not just because I drew it or you have some weird OCD about having a favorites collection so large you break the Internet.

As for feedback, there are two factors that contribute to good feedback:

a) Having watchers that actually contribute feedback. Some people are actually really helpful and enjoy providing feedback, and some people are content with smothering you with nothing but praise. You just gotta take 'em as they come, I suppose.

b) Specifically asking for feedback helps. I don't give critique on a piece unless it's specifically asked for; a lot of DA users, I suppose, are like that because many users tend to be touchy when it comes to critique and will take any form of pointing out weak points in a piece as a personal attack/insult. I know you've already done this, so my advice in this area pretty much amounts to: don't give up, someone will eventually come along and offer the feedback you need.

b2) The new Critique system may be a step towards alleviating this problem--it's a shame it's only for subscribers right now.

I'm not good at getting what I'm trying to say across, so I usually don't leave comments. In my "why am I here?" section, I picked "to fave without commenting."
:icontisserovehicks:
do you know how i ironic this is:noes:, i was about to accuse you of fav and running and i wanted more feedback but you just posted this so that cancels what im saying. |l
and with that thanks for the fav anyway! :D

the odd part for me is that i don't really fav much stuff of people i know or watch. I prefer to comment on their stuff if i have something to say. I usually only fav when i'm surfing DA and find something i like, because i don't usually feel like it means much to get a compliment from someone you don't know :/......................or i'm just wierd xD

I value comments more than faves. However, if someone is just going to leave a "pretty" or a "good picture" comment, then I'd rather they just faved and ran away with it because those kinds of comments are of no value at all. So: ideal scenario would be a comment of more than the "cool" variety with a fave. Otherwise, just fave - don't bother with meaningless comments.

:w00t: for the tracker! 8D

I do like it when people comment, and for the most part those who comment name something they like or think needs improvement (or both xD), so I guess I'm spoiled in that way.
I like faves too, as it means people like my work, and if a good number of people have already said "Great pose, though the head should be smaller" then I can understand why someone wouldn't comment.

And since I often fave-'n-run on people I don't watch (and some that I do) I can see both sides of the coin.

To me, as long as I have at least a few people who don't fave-'n-run, instead leaving valuable and helpful comments, then I don't mind the mass of faves that I get on a lot of my pics.

Aw, man... I'm outside the time for a free request. >_< Ah, well...

"What are your feelings on commenting/faving?"

People need to realize that both are equally important, but if someone is in a rush to clean out their devwatch, I understand a fave with no comment.

"Do you think it's okay to fave a deviation without commenting to say why?"

Yeah, sometimes people are extremely busy or have a lot of people they are watching.

"Do you consider a fave to be a compliment in itself? Why, or why not?"

Definitely. In fact, when people leave meaningful comments, but no favorite, it's kind of like saying "I really like this piece, but I don't consider it good enough to place in my favorites nor to share it and recommend it to others."
